While the rest of the student body might have gotten a month off from school for winter break, the Roanoke men’s and women’s basketball teams were still working hard on the court and in the weight room. With half of their seasons played over these four weeks, the Maroons have reached a good point for a short recap on what fans may have missed as we enter the new year.
The women’s team played 11 total games since the start of winter break, bringing home their fair share of wins and losses. Top scorers included sophomores Molly Hassell and Laura McManimen, and freshman Kristina Harrel, who all three consistently scored double digits. The women earned wins against Franklin & Marshall, Meredith, Randolph, and Washington and Lee. After losing to Guilford earlier this month, the team put up a fight and achieved a well-deserved win this past Wednesday. Hassell scored 15 points and sunk the winning bucket at the last second, which pushed the ladies over the top for the close final score of 53-52. Additional top scorers for Wednesday’s game were sophomore Allison Livengood who scored 11 points and junior Victoria Maxwell with 9.
The men played 8 games over the break with an even split between wins and losses. Two consistent high scorers were juniors Josh Freund and CJ Miles with help from sophomore Joe Mikalauskas, who moved from reserve to starter for three games and two wins. They had four total wins at Staten Island, Virginia Wesleyan, Bridgewater, and just recently, Washington & Lee. The men played at Washington & Lee this past Wednesday for the win, a game that was secured so early on that all players got to hit the court.
Miles, Mikalaukas, and freshman Jorden Davis were high scorers, all pulling double digits. Freshmen Logan Vosburg, Colton Reed, and Dillion Thomas, as well as sophomore Brandon Harrell also scored for Roanoke, bringing the score to a solid 90-54 win for your Maroons.
