At this time in the semester, it can seem like there’s something going on practically every day. Clubs and organizations are hosting events left and right, trying to draw student attention toward their particular group. I know from experience that it can be very difficult to even keep track of every event you may be interested in, let alone actually attend them. There are also many students who are simply uninterested in anything the college has to offer recreationally. However, I would like to advocate for the attending of at least one or two events, due to these activities making up the very soul of the culture here at Roanoke College.
Some events are Roanoke College traditions. One example is the Historical Homecoming put on each fall by the Historical Society – a celebration involving dressing in historical costumes, parading across campus, and culminating in a karaoke party. Another tradition is the President’s Ball in the spring, serving as a fancy gala for the student body. One more recent tradition is the Shushok Shindig (which we recently got to experience once more)! Traditions like these are incredibly important for connecting past, present, and future students. Partaking in these events is a way to leave your mark on the college’s story.
The “smaller” events around campus are no less important; in fact, these types of gatherings can be a lifeline for students struggling socially. A club meeting or event can be a great way to meet new people, step out of your comfort zone, and grow as a person. Students who would otherwise only leave their dorms to eat or go to class may find themselves forming a new community and support system after attending just one event that interests them. Getting out and socializing is proven to help with students’ mental health, so these events are a natural way to facilitate those kinds of interpersonal connections.
Whether you attend every single event each day or just a few throughout the semester, getting involved on campus has benefits. Every event is worth it from the possibility of providing someone with the community they need… especially when they have free food and prizes!
