The Maroons women’s volleyball team has gotten off to a very good start this season. The official start to the season was Sept. 4 in the Averett University tournament with a tough game against a formidable Salem College opponent. The Spirits of Salem College won the first two sets, but both sets were very close losses proving there was still fight in the Maroons. Sets three and four went in Roanoke’s favor but this time the score deficits were even closer (five- and four-point differentials respectively). The score would sit at two sets a piece with an important fifth set on the way. The Maroons ultimately came up with the win after having their backs against the wall in the first two sets of action.

Roanoke would then come home to play six straight in the Cregger Center including the Maroon Classic where they played four games. The Maroon Classic also featured a five-set, competitive game. This game would feature the Maroons and the Tornados of Brevard College. The first set went in favor of the Tornados, but the second and third set went in favor of the Maroons with a hefty win in the third set (25-5). Brevard took the fourth, but the fifth set was won by ‘Noke. Junior Emma Catoe and Freshman, Gracelynn Clark each had 11 kills to help propel the Maroons to victory.

In their first ODAC home game of the season, the Roanoke College women’s volleyball team swept their opponent, Averett, in three sets. It was a “Pack the Court” worth remembering with free food vouchers of $10, rally towels, and the chance to win raffle prizes such as a $75 Amazon gift card. The game allowed the abilities of multiple freshmen to shine for their new team here in Sunny Salem. Those freshmen included Zarah Love, Karly Shipe, Olivia Horneman, Abby Bishop and Cassidy Zalinski each with impressive stats in their win against Averett. The team now sits at a record of 11-4 after a win last Friday against Hood College.
