‘Noke Women’s Soccer 2-0 Senior Day Win

Written by Lauren Price, Staff Reporter

The Roanoke College women’s soccer team hosted the Sweet Briar Vixens on Sep. 26 to host their annual Senior Day. This game coincided with Family Weekend, which meant it was the perfect opportunity for the families of the eight seniors to come and support this special team. Seniors include Suchy, Carr, Fisher, Thackston, Fulkerson, Cage, Orndorff, and Szoke. Through thick and thin, these ladies have helped shape the program into some successful seasons these past four years.

Two seniors, No. 4 Carr and No. 5 Fisher, had successful campaigns in their Senior Day game. Carr had ten shots, four of which were on goal, and Fisher had five shots, three of which were on goal. Carr had a successful shot on goal during the 20th minute of play, giving the Maroons an early score. She celebrated with her team before heading back to the field, attempting to widen the score.

Carr was successful at providing an opportunity for her teammate, sophomore Caroline Arndt, to score. Arndt’s goal was scored just seven minutes after Carr’s good shot, which would be difficult for Sweet Briar to overcome. The Maroons would continue to try scoring, shooting on the goal 28 times compared with Sweet Briar’s two; ultimately there was no more scoring on the day but ‘Noke would come away with a victory on a very special day.

One of the team’s testy moments came just one week later on Oct. 3. The weather was cold and rainy, so bad in fact the game time had to be moved back one hour to avoid the worst parts of the showers. Nevertheless, the game must go on. The opponent, Christopher Newport, would open the scoring in the 22nd minute of play. Carr had two shots on goal, while Szoke and Alvarez each had one attempt on the goal. While their attempts were solid, the opposing goalkeeper managed to fend them off.

Our own goalkeeper, No. 0 Suchy, also blocked four goals from scoring, but Christopher Newport’s early scoring was the only done in that game, unfortunately resulting in a ‘Noke loss. The season is still going well for the women’s soccer team with five wins, three losses, and three ties. While the season is far from over, I wish all the best of luck to the eight seniors on the team who will be graduating soon.
