Roanoke Softball Soars to New Heights

Roanoke college softball has had a solid start to their season, and seems to be on the rise. After a few tough matchups in the first few rounds, they have bounced back and put together some excellent performances.

‘Noke has won three of their last four matchups, including two victories against Southern Virginia University and a victory against Mary Washington. In their last four games, they have outscored their opponents 33 to 14. In their match against Southern Virginia University, Roanoke had a five run third inning to help launch them to a 10-1 win. Throughout the game, the Maroons had five players record an RBI and only a sole error. Riley Shupe and Molly Houchins led the team with two runs each. In their next game of the double-header, Roanoke continued their dominance, executing an impressive 9-2 victory.

Riley Shupe had a whopping three runs while Charlotte Gale batted in an impressive five. The game was close for a few innings, but the Maroons were able to seal it in the sixth inning. Against Mary Washington, ‘Noke endured a difficult loss in their first matchup. After leading for the duration of the game, the Maroons allowed four runs at the bottom of the final inning to lose a close one by a final score of 4-3. Roanoke had nine hits on the day, but unfortunately, many of them sadly did not transfer to runs. Despite the unfortunate loss, our softball team quickly rebounded by beating Mary Washington and getting their revenge.

In their most recent game, a comfortable 11-7 victory against the Mary Washington Eagles, ‘Noke had 13 hits. Heather McQueeney, Kiran Kapur and Haleigh Vaughan all had multiple runs and Roanoke College was able to put together a definitive victory. After being down 4-1 in the 2nd inning, the Maroons were able to come back with ease. They took the lead in the 3rd inning and never looked back afterwards. The 11-7 victory in the warm weather marked Roanoke’s fifth win of the season, putting them in a solid trajectory. With a tricky remaining slate, Roanoke looks to stay firm for the rest of the season.
