For those unacquainted with football, Super Bowl LIII will occur on Feb. 3 in Atlanta, GA. The LA Rams will be face the New England Patriots, but more importantly: Maroon 5 will be hosting the halftime show, with rappers Travis Scott and Big Boi joining them.
Maroon 5 was not the NFL’s first choice; Rihanna and Cardi B both turned down what is usually a popular offer in protest of police brutality and racial injustice. Interestingly, Pink also turned down the offer, making Maroon 5 the NFL’s fourth choice.
Beginning around two months ago, a very interesting petition hit change.org – the Internet’s favorite method of screaming into the void and getting nothing accomplished.
Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of Spongebob, died from complications due to ALS. The petition hit change.org soon after, and immediately garnered attention. Currently it has 1.2 million signees, and the goal is to have “Sweet Victory” from the popular television show performed at the Super Bowl.
While popular petitions have gone nowhere before, it was nothing to expect the same from this one, but a certain tweet made on Dec. 12 exploded on social media.
No word, a simple gif: Spongebob dancing before the big debut of Squidward’s marching band. While this did not absolutely confirm if the song will be played, Maroon 5 gave their opinion on the matter.
Perhaps desperate to avoid any negative press, or out of genuine interest to play the song, Maroon 5’s show teaser showed footage from Hillenburg’s Spongebob, briefly cutting into performance footage and crowd shots.
It’s strange and out of place, but very much in the spirit of Maroon 5.
So has anyone actually confirmed if the song is going to be played for the halftime show? No. However, the odds are saying a definite maybe.
