Dolly Parton: A Woman Who Changed The World Through Kindness, Music, and Education

Written by Lauralee Robinson, Staff Reporter

From the queen of country music to a renowned philanthropist, Dolly Parton built a lasting legacy that goes far beyond the stage.

Born on January 19, 1946, in Sevier County, Tennessee, Parton grew up in a large family with limited financial resources. As a little girl, the Smoky Mountains inspired her imagination, music and values, which shaped her artistry later in her career. Despite facing challenges, she never stopped pursuing her dreams, and this led to her becoming one of the biggest names in country music.

Dolly Parton has had several music hits throughout her career, including “9 to 5” and “Jolene.” Her music has brought together a countless number of people, connecting audiences through love, heartbreak, hard work, and the never-ending desire to succeed. She is featured in the country music hall of fame, along with a countless number of platinum and gold records. However, despite her success, she never abandoned her values and dedicated her life to giving back to the world.

One of her most significant contributions is her Imagination Library, a literacy program she founded in 1995. Dolly loved working with children, and she was an influential advocate for education. Her program was inspired by her father, who was unable to read, to foster a love for reading in younger generations. The library provides free books to children from birth to the age of five, regardless of the financial situation. It has expanded internationally, with a total donation of more than 332 million books.

Beyond her philanthropy, Parton has positively influenced the world through her public image. Known for her humor and over-the-top glamour, Dolly encouraged everyone to embrace who they are, rather than conforming to someone else’s expectations. Additionally, she always spoke about the importance of kindness and remembering we are all equal, no matter our backgrounds.

For college students, Dolly Parton’s legacy offers an important lesson: Likeability isn’t measured by awards, glamour, or finances. It is measured by how someone treats the world around them and using their privilege to help others. Dolly is a perfect example of how one person’s passion can change the course of the world.

Dolly Parton’s life story is more than becoming a star. It is about using success to give back to those in need and leading a life of kindness. Whether you enjoy her music, or her passion for philanthropy, Dolly offers meaningful connections through her hard work.

I think everyone can learn something from Dolly, and remember, “it takes a lot of money to look this cheap.”
