What To Do Instead of Doom Scrolling

As assignments pile up, it is easy to feel tempted to scroll endlessly on your phone when free time finally comes your way. Consistent scrolling on electronics can be damaging to your mental health. It causes stress hormones and social isolation to increase, especially if you are exposing yourself to negative news (although this does not mean to block out the news completely). As for physical health, scrolling extensively can lead to headaches and difficulty sleeping. If you are in search of something else to do, then here are some suggestions!

To begin, read a book! If you do not have any on hand, then visit the Fintel Library or the Salem Public Library and check out a book. Each has a wide selection of books, ranging from fantasy to nonfiction. The Salem Public Library hosts events such as book clubs that could be worth checking out as a new way to socialize in the community off campus. You could even take inspiration to create a book club among friends!

If you are a fan of games, whether it be sports, video, or board games, there are plenty of options on campus. As the weather warms up, consider going to the softball, baseball, or volleyball games to show support for school and enjoy the warmer temperatures. If you would prefer to play video or board games, then swing by the game room in lower Colket Center. In the game room you will find two T.V.s ready for video games along with a pool table, foosball table, ping pong table, and a shelf filled with various card and board games to enjoy. This is a particularly good option if you are looking for some fun with friends.

Although, if you do want to spend time in the sun in a more peaceful way, taking a walk around campus or a hike might be the move for you. It can be a good way to help distress and get your body moving. Not to mention, physical activity is beneficial for the brain and memory so you can retain more while studying for your next test. If you want to go on a hike, visit Outdoor Adventures for gear rental or to sign up for their upcoming outdoor excursions. These excursions include mountain biking, kayaking, whitewater rafting, and more!

Next time you begin to reach for your phone, think back to the options you have that might be more beneficial than endlessly scrolling. During hard times it becomes important to turn to friends and hopefully this provides you with ideas to enjoy your time in a new way. Especially in a way that will leave you feeling joyful rather than more stressed than when you began!
