Women’s volleyball has been off to a very early start this year. They began the year off with a scrimmage against Ferrum College on August 19th, before most of the student body was back from summer break. The games following that scrimmage were two tournaments: one hosted by Averett, and the other hosted here in the Cregger Center. The Averett tournament proved to be difficult as the Maroons went 1-3 overall. The “Maroon Classic” proved to be a different story, however. RC had the home court advantage and a crowd to cheer them onto victory. The results of that tournament were 3 wins and 1 loss, which was a turnaround from the previous contests.
After those intense weekends of competition, the volleyball team had a bit of time to unwind. Although they had two back-to-back losses against Meredith and Washington and Lee, they came ready to play against Pfeiffer University. #10 Sidney Alumbaugh had a particularly good game with 10 kills, 1 ace, and 9 digs. Although she did not lead the team in any of these categories, the combination of being an offensive and a defensive player is highly impressive. Raygan Wade at the setter position also had a good game with 31 assists and 2 aces. Roanoke played a competitive match in all 3 sets, and the Maroons managed to pull ahead in all three, resulting in a Roanoke win!
The Maroons have a match Tuesday night at 6:30PM against our in-city rivals from Hollins University. Also, they will face the Hornets of Shenandoah University on Friday, September 19th at 7PM. If you’re bored and want to watch a good game but can’t make it in-person, tune onto their stream online!
