History Homecoming

By Sabrina Rogers

Hey Maroons! Hope everyone had a wonderful fall break. Speaking of the Autumnal season, it is rearing close to more activities here on campus. Specifically, the History Department here at Roanoke College is hosting their annual ‘History Homecoming Dress Up” Day! This is a time where you can dress up in costumes from the 18th century through the 1980s and even participate in the costume photo contest. This event will take place Tuesday, November 19th. If you are interested but do not know where to get a costume, the Living History Lab has an open costuming day in the Bank Building on the Second Floor on November 7th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you are unavailable to come during that time, you can make a one-on-one appointment with the Living History Lab Staff by emailing Dr. Mary Henold at henold@roanoke.edu or follow @rchistory on Instagram for more updates! Everyone on campus is invited to participate, you do not need to be a history major to join.

I had the honor of interviewing a participant from last year, Haley Kuehn. Here is what she has said.

“Honestly, my favorite part is seeing everyone in costume. It’s such a niche thing we do as a community and seeing people enjoying themselves wearing silly period outfits throughout the day makes me smile. History Homecoming is the Historical Society’s biggest event of the semester. It’s more than just dressing up by day and karaoke by night, it’s an event celebrating not only the past, but each other. My experience with History Homecoming is brief since this is only my second year participating. It’s such a great time! In the evening, after everyone’s changed, we have a procession to Clio, the Greek Muse of History, then gather at the Bank Building for karaoke and a costume contest! People should go because it’s…a great way to make friends and meet people who have similar interests in History! Not only are students who go, but professors in the History Department join in the fun…”

And that’s that folks! Hope to see y’all there!
