Song(s) of the Summer!

By Sabrina Rogers

Hey y’all! Welcome back to the Brackety-Ack! I hope everyone is thriving and excited to be back on campus! And for the new Maroons in the house, welcome! We are so excited to have y’all here! Speaking of new, a lot of music was released over the summer (From May to August)! Ranging from the infamous Taylor Swift album, “Tortured Poets Department” to newer artists rising to fame like Chappell Roan or Tate McRae. In this article, we’re shedding some light on the popular songs that described this summer (whether it’d be a brat summer or an Espresso summer)!

Starting off strong, near the beginning of the month Billie Eilish released “Hit Me Hard and Soft” which is her third studio album. While each song on this album is noteworthy, the one song that rose to fame consistently (and is currently sitting at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 as this article is being written) is “Birds of a Feather.” This light-hearted song reached the hearts of many and did not disappoint to start summer with a bang!

Sabrina Carpenter is also another artist that rose to fame this summer! Starting on Disney Channel, our Polly-Pocket-esque pop star released a single from her album “Short n’ Sweet” called “Espresso” which currently has 1,173,617,237 streams on Spotify at the time of writing this article. This is not the only song that Sabrina has released which had the world hooked this summer; “Please Please Please” rolled out with an accompanying music video. This song has iconic lyrics and a hook that has everyone singing the chorus.

On June 7th, Charli XCX released a lime green album which has altered the summer vibe for 2024. This album is called “brat” which coined the above statement “brat summer.” Similarly to Taylor Swift having “eras” many people all over social media have used “___ summer” to describe the vibe of their summer. The song that went popular all over the social media platform of TikTok was “Apple” which even has its own dance! This dance/electronic pop album cultivated many and has been iconic since its release.

Chappell Roan is for everyone; regardless of what music you listen to. The song that blew up over the summer was from her 2023 debut album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” called “HOT TO GO” which also has its own dance but was created by Chappell herself. This, as well as many other songs from this album, have blown up and has a catchy chorus and such a fun danceability to which everyone can love and appreciate. She opened for Olivia Rodrigo from February to April 2024 despite not being as popular as she is currently.

As much as writing about every song that came out this summer is fun and all, that is all the time we have folks. Till next publication!
