A Concert to Remember

The unfortunate circumstances of Hurricane Helene canceled a portion of family weekend events such as the R Shushok Shindig, however Saturday was still packed full of fun activities. One event that sticks out especially is the family weekend concert, starring the Jazz Band, Roanotes, and Roanoke Choir! This incredible serenade was full of gorgeous music, extremely talented musicians, and full of invigorating passion. It all took place in the Antrim Chapel, causing the music to echo and bounce across the church in a mesmerizing way that further indulged the audience into the music.

First up was the Jazz Band, starting off with very expressive and swingy pieces that kept up with fast-paced tempos. One of the coolest and most unique aspects of the Jazz Band is their plethora of original solos, whether it be drums, saxophone, and more. Nearly each musician stood up and rode the musical tide by creating their own solo in the heat of the moment, bringing a new and fun interpretation to the table.

Up next was the Roanotes, Roanoke College’s very own acapella group since 2013! An impressive fact about this group is that it’s entirely student-led, meaning that all the songs to the practices themselves were all entirely organized by this group of extremely talented singers. Their repertoire consisted of classics such as Sweet Dreams, Vienna, Rolling in The Deep, and I’m Still Standing, all of which beautifully performed with their crisp harmonies alongside radiating enthusiasm. Some say they have ninety-nine problems, but a pitch sure ain’t one!

Finally, the Roanoke College Choir capped off the event with their alluring elegance and formal atmosphere. The selection they sang consisted of Down to The River, Will The Circle Be Unbroken, and most importantly the Alma Mater sung at the end of every concert. This fresh variety of bluegrass music swayed the audience with their catchy tunes, and at the end taught the assembly to sing the Alma Mater themselves! It was a moment that united the Roanoke College community together, succeeding in performing yet another wonderful concert. Make sure not to miss their upcoming Lessons and Carols concert on Sunday, December 1st in the Basilica of St. Andrew!
