‘Noke Women’s Basketball Starting Strong

Do you want something to do when students return after Winter Break? You could go to the Cregger Center and watch some women’s basketball. The team already had their annual Jean Beamer Tip-Off Tournament where they competed well with a record of one win and one loss. Those games were played with intent to develop a strategic plan for the rest of the season. The Maroons tested who would be a good start for the season, but three players have been consistent with their playing times: Ashley Fowler ‘27, Nadia Snesarev ‘28, and Alicea Farmer ‘27.

Farmer and Mark Samuel from the wrestling team were named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference “Athletes of the Week” on Nov. 24th. Farmer had just competed in a game against North Carolina Wesleyan where the Maroons narrowly defeated their opponents. During that game Farmer completed a double-double. This is a stat where a player gets two different statistics in double digits. She scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. She also blocked two shots and stole five balls from her opponents, four of which were in the 4th quarter. This was Alicea’s first weekly award for the ‘25-’26 season.

During the NC Wesleyan game the Maroons were able to keep an even pace, despite the opponents scoring first. Lots of fouls committed by the visiting team helped the Maroons capitalize on the free throw line. Roanoke was able to put up 14-16 free throws just in the 4th quarter. If the visitors hadn’t fouled as much, the results could have been completely different. Lesson learned though: Practice your free throws!

It’s going to be about 3.5 weeks before the Maroons return to the Cregger Center as they have a slew of non-conference matchups. Let’s wish them luck at their next tournament in Washington, D.C!
