Forgotten Fall Fruits

With cold mornings and the leaves falling faster, Maroons are settling into fall weather. Another thing that lets us know that we are at the peak of autumn is the many “fall-themed” foods, snacks, and drinks around. But what makes a fall snack “fall”?

The fruits and vegetables in season, such as the better-known ones like apples and pumpkins, have become a staple of fall due to their freshness and abundance. But what about others, such as grapes and pears? They are also in season during the fall, but are less used when we make fall-themed snacks. This can be attributed to the fall color scheme we are used to. It is derived from the fallen leaves and their orange, yellow, and brown colors. This even inspired the autumn attire, with people dressed in warm colors.

But to this I say no more! Although I would do unfathomable things for a pumpkin spice drink, I believe there are other fruits that deserve the title of “fall.” Therefore, I am advocating for pears in this article. Pears can be very versatile, just like pumpkins. Poached pears are a simple dessert yet considered elegant. If you are looking for something more classic and rustic, pear crumble has what you are looking for. Because of its not-too-sweet flavor, it can also be used on savory dishes, such as a pear and gouda sandwich.

This fall, I ask you to give pears a chance to shine as bright as an apple does.
