The Maroons Track and Field teams are almost done for the season, but there’s still a bit to go, and a bit that’s happened between the last article and now. The throwers of both teams competed at Eastern Mennonite University to get a better look at their field, where they will be competing in the ODAC Outdoor Finals in just a few days; Friday, April 25th and Saturday, April 26th. Most notable for the girl throwers were two top three finishers in two different events. Abby McGlothlin placed third in the javelin throw, and Sarah Fuchs placed third in the hammer throw. The men’s team had a fifth-place finish with Senior, Jim Sarsfield placing a mark of 45.51 m in the hammer throw.
Over that same weekend (April 11th-12th), the runners of both teams went to Lynchburg to compete in the Dennis Craddock Coaches Invitational. There were many personal records on the Men’s team – at least 11 – including Elias Ammon’s sprint in the 800m race. His personal record of 1:53.75 earned him a 2nd place finish in one of his last races this season. Now, turning over to the Women’s success at this meet, starting with Ophelia Ladner. After she broke the school record at the previous meet at High Point University, she continued her success in the 400m hurdles with a 1st place finish. Junior Lindsey Hobin was just behind her in that event by a couple of seconds, and she managed to place third with a time of 1:06.98. Our 4×100 relay team also notched a first-place win, with runners being Lindsey Hobin, Nalonda Henderson, Eleanor Hinckley, and Mae Kaufman.
Now I want to transition this article to more than just athletics. Mae Kaufman, a freshman sprinter on our team, has an older brother named Eddie who is on the Maroon baseball team. Recently, Eddie was diagnosed with a form of blood cancer, and was not able to return to Roanoke College. A bone marrow drive was held for Eddie Wednesday, April 16th, but the family still needs help. During this difficult time, Maroons need to support fellow Maroons, and our tough working student athletes and their families. If you are able to help support the Kaufman siblings by donating financially or becoming a donor, please do so.
