The Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field teams hit the ground running two weekends ago with half of each respective team going to Coastal Carolina University. Meanwhile, the other halves were making their debut at Washington and Lee University. Both teams experienced cold and windy weather at their respective meets. The men had many top 10 finishes that weekend, including Matt Garis’s new school record in the 3000-meter race. He finished 5th overall! Both the men’s and women’s team had success in the 4×100 race at Coastal Carolina University with the men coming in first, and the women placing 8th. That race for the Maroons helped launch Freshman Amari Carter to ODAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honors. This freshman is going places here at Roanoke College!
Now onto the past weekend, where the Maroons again split in the tournaments with half of the teams going to the Hornet Open in Lynchburg, and the other half going to the Raleigh Relays at NC State. The throwers on our team had major success at the Hornet Open this past weekend, four hitting PRs and putting them in good standings for the ODAC conference. Senior Jim Sarsfield currently sits at 2nd in ODAC rankings with a mark in hammer at 48.35 meters. Freshman Bri Marando also had luck and success with the hammer, out-throwing her previous record by 3.36 meters or 11 feet. When asked how she felt about this PR, she said “I didn’t react the way I normally do when I earn a PR. I gave myself a little clap, and asked my coach how I could improve even more for my next throw, and also the next meet”.
Many of the Maroon Track and Field athletes are currently on the top 25 ODAC listings, which puts them in great positions for the Conference Finals at the end of the month. On April 4th and April 5th, both teams will travel to High Point University to hopefully break more records and continue this season’s success!
