Three-Pointer Blitz

The Roanoke College women’s basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 58-42 win over Mary Washington on Tuesday night. The Maroons (2-5, 0-1 ODAC) put together a solid all-around performance, combining strong defense and some timely shooting to get back in the win column. Roanoke got off to a fast start, with sophomore Nadia Snesarev hitting a three-pointer on the team’s first possession. The Maroons built an early lead and held off a push from Mary Washington, finishing the first quarter up 14-11.

In the second, Roanoke’s offense picked up steam. Freshman Reese Fritz hit a couple of big three-pointers, and the Maroons outscored the Eagles 17-11 to go into halftime with a 31-22 lead. Mary Washington came out strong in the third quarter and closed the gap to just one point, but Roanoke stayed composed. Some timely shooting, including key three-pointers and free throws, kept the Maroons ahead, and they led 44-36 going into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was when Roanoke really took control. Fritz, who had already been playing well, went on a rampage. She hit three straight three-pointers, pushing the Maroons’ lead to 53-42 with just under five minutes left. Fritz finished with a career-high 15 points, including five three-pointers, and was a big reason Roanoke was able to close out the game. Freshman Paige Bruer also played a big role, adding 13 points to the effort. Senior Kiley Hylton contributed with some key baskets down the stretch, helping to seal the win.

Roanoke’s defense was solid throughout, and senior Mariah Cain was a key factor, grabbing eight rebounds, dishing out six assists, and blocking two shots. The Maroons shot 40.9% from the field and 38.5% from three-point range, while limiting Mary Washington to just 30.5% shooting. Roanoke forced 13 turnovers and kept the Eagles from finding any rhythm on offense. With the win, Roanoke improved to 2-5 on the season and will look to carry this momentum into their next game. On Saturday, December 7th, the Maroons will travel to Ashland, VA. to face Randolph-Macon in an ODAC matchup at 2:00PM. After a tough stretch, this victory gives Roanoke something to build on as they enter conference play. For now, the Maroons will enjoy the win and prepare for the challenges ahead!
