In-Between Holidays

With a couple of weeks left before Thanksgiving break and Halloween just ending last weekend, we are in an awkward in-between of holidays that leaves us not really knowing what to do. Some people continue Halloween celebrations this week while others are already creating a list of thanks to say at the dinner table. Some students are already in the Christmas spirit! With this mash-up of holidays, you might wonder what you should focus on, so I’m here to recommend some fun activities to do as we power through these last couple of assignments before break!

Make everything-but-the-kitchen-sink cookies. Halloween might have left you with an overload of chocolates and candies and you may be stressing about what to do with them! An easy and equally delicious alternative to just eating them all and ending up with a stomach ache is baked goods. These cookies have everything you love and need in them. Nothing is out of the question. Experiment with adding different kinds of chocolates, gummies, and snacks to a simple cookie batter, and then throw it in the oven! It’s a fun way to reinvent thousands of the same old candy bars. Especially if you visited President Shushok and got those full-sized bars!

Those cookies are a perfect dessert to share at the Thanksgiving table, but a more classic approach is the American favorite apple pie! The “Inkenberry Orchards” is an apple-picking farm just twenty minutes down the road. With fresh produce and friendly faces, you can get some apples, gather your friends in a dorm’s kitchen, and get to baking! This is a perfect idea if you are considering hosting a Friendsgiving. We might be away from college during this special holiday but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate early with this amazing community we have found at Roanoke College. Good luck with pre-registration Maroons and have a great rest of your week!
