The Roanoke women’s basketball team began ODAC Conference play this Wednesday, December 1st, against Hollins University. Before Wednesday night, the team had a 4-game winning streak against out-of-conference teams including Averett University, who will join the ODAC Conference in the 2022-2023 season. Not only have these first four games been victories for the women’s team, they have all been by margins of over 15 points. After finishing last year in the ODAC Championship falling to the Lynchburg Hornets, the Maroons seek redemption in this season. In the D3hoops.com women’s Top 25, Week 1 poll, Roanoke College received votes, shadowing a Top 25 placement in the near future for our outstanding women’s teams. Wednesday’s victory over Hollins University saw incredible play from Roanoke’s offense with nine players putting points on the board. Ending the first quarter with Roanoke leading at 22-19, the Roanoke women came into the second quarter with power, keeping Hollins to only 14 points. Captain Renee Alquiza finished the game with 21 points, being 5 for 6 from the 3-point line. Guard JaBryah Haverkamp added an additional 18 points, while Kristina Harrel added 16. Defensively, the Maroons were on fire with 29 defensive rebounds and 3 blocks against Hollins. With a score of 78-55, the Roanoke women add another impressive win to their 5-0 record. The Maroons travel to Eastern Mennonite University this Saturday, December 4th for their second ODAC conference game at 2 PM.
