Another week of events has piled through RC! However, for some, it’s been busy with Greek Life! What’s Greek Life on RC? We have 8 organizations on campus, three women’s organizations and five men’s organizations. For the women’s organizations, we have Alpha Sigma Alpha (ASA), Chi Omega (Chi O), and Delta Gamma (DG). For the men’s we have Kappa Alpha (Beta Rho) (KA), Pi Kappa Alpha (Phi Chapter) (Pike), Pi Kappa Phi (Xi Chapter) (Pi Kapp), Pi Lambda Phi (Lambda Kappa) (Pi Lam), and Sigma Chi (Tau Chapter).
Now, while these are the recognized ones, some honors societies should also be recognized! Alpha Kappa Chi (AKX) and Alpha Psi Omega (Theater Honors Society) specifically. AKX is the Environmental Professional and Service Fraternity at Roanoke College, and APO, as it suggests, is for honoring the art and stagecraft in Theater.
Recruitment week for these organizations involves the councils of the respective organizations meeting students who are interested in joining Greek Life. For sororities, you get introduced to all three organizations before you receive an invitation (bids) to join. In the same vein, fraternities have different events throughout the week to meet potential members. For example, Pi Lam will be hosting Pizza and Volleyball on Monday, September 22nd, at Marion court from 5:00PM-7:00PM for rush (to find out more, check out their Instagrams).
These organizations hold a myriad of events throughout the year to help fundraise for different causes, but also to create community with the campus. For example, Pie A Pi Kapp (during Philanthropy Week) is where you can donate money for a good cause and Pie a brother in the face with whipped cream. Always a blast to see walking between classes!
Another fun event that will be happening (and is new!) is Fine Arts Friday! Alpha Psi Omega Theater Honors Society will be hosting Bi-Weekly events in Olin, where we either do an activity or a viewing of a show. This week (aka today), we will be showing the 2000 rendition of Hamlet! It’s at 7:00PM in Olin Hall 231 and ends around 10:00PM. It’s not your average Hamlet, so I recommend coming out! (Snacks will be provided!)
