May Term Magic

I will never forget that last night. Standing on the balcony of the apartment where I had spent the semester, planes flying overhead and the Washington Monument in the background. While I was in Washington, DC I not only had to learn to be independent but also gained experience in my field.

When people talk about those four magical years of college, they are often filled with once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Roanoke College is filled with those experiences if you go looking for them. Professors all over campus want to make it happen. They will all work with you to get you off campus for a new experience. This can manifest in many different ways. For some, it is a local internship that provides valuable experience and connections. This can also resemble a Travel May Term, where you get to explore a place filled with not only new experiences but also sights. In May Terms, students also get to explore their professors’ passions and joys. This can give students a new understanding of their professors.

There is also a summer option for freshmen and sophomores who are interested in going to Oxford. This program allows students to explore history and literature in the historic college setting. If you are feeling comfortable and daring, you can leave campus for a whole semester. There are many programs available for students to study away.

Every experience can be life-changing and shift the whole projection of your life. You have to be willing to take that chance. If you are interested in any of these programs, reach out to your advisors. Everyone wants you to have that experience, but only those who go looking for them are guaranteed the chance.
