It’s an indisputable fact that there are many, MANY different types of music. From soft classical music filled with the sounds of beautiful violins and gentle flutes, to the loudest death metal with screaming guitars and incredible vocals, everyone’s taste in music is bound to be a little different. This is what I have decided to explore lately – what are the music tastes of the Roanoke College student population?
My testing was conducted via an open question box posted on my Instagram story asking my peers to tell me their “favorite music genres and/or artists.” I received incredibly varied results, both in genre and artist! A few very popular artists – Taylor Swift, Hozier, Lana Del Ray, and Ariana Grande – were mentioned, which is unsurprising. Music artists are popular for a reason, after all! Some other results I got were artists I hadn’t heard of before, such as Noah Kahan and Brian Scary. Then there was a responder who mentioned Elvis as a favorite artist, and someone else answered with They Might Be Giants. As for music genres, the answers were no less diverse. The general consensus seems to be alternative rock and/or indie music is very popular among the student body, as multiple students answered along these lines. However, each of them had a slightly different subgenre in mind with their answers, which is really cool. I also got multiple answers of folk music, which is no less awesome. Other answers included pop, k-pop, 90s r&b, and musical theatre songs!
Personally, most of my playlist consists of pop, musical theatre, and alternative rock. My current favorite music artists are MARINA, Chappell Roan, and Kiltro. Though with all these different answers, I might have some new artists to check out!
