Two weekends ago, the Roanoke College softball team hosted two of the best teams in the nation to play double headers against both squads. Those two teams were Virginia Wesleyan and Randolph-Macon. Virginia Wesleyan is undefeated, listed at the top of the rankings for most of the season. Randolph-Macon at the time of the games was in the top 25 of Division III softball teams, but has since fallen below that threshold. Fortunately, our roster has a deep pitching staff including Senior, Baylee Compton and Junior, Gracy Clary, so playing against those two institutions was not impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first of the double headers would be Roanoke vs. the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins. Compton, one of the top pitchers in the country, would be faced with a Marlin lineup that has caused some damage against opponents all season. Compton managed to keep the bats silent until the fourth inning when Virginia Wesleyan scored two runs. They did the same thing in the fifth inning, increasing their lead to four. At that point, the Maroons coaching staff decided to take her out of the game and utilize their closing pitchers hoping that Compton could throw the next day against Randolph-Macon. While Maddie Wagner, one of the relief pitchers, let up some runs, an end score of 9-0 against the best team in the country is not terrible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clary would take the mound for the second game. One thing the team tried to focus on more in the second game was offensive pressure and scoring points. This was certainly not an easy task, but in the fourth inning, it was made possible due to an error by the Marlins. Catcher Charlotte Gale had two hits during the game, but it was Haleigh Vaughan\u2019s hard-hit ball that brought in the two Roanoke points. The second game against the Marlins also resulted in a loss, but it has helped prove to the team that we are not to be taken lightly.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second double header was the following day against the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon (R-MC). Compton would return to the pitching mound for the first game, and Clary would return for the second game. Both pitchers threw complete games only walking three batters throughout the day. Focusing on solid bat-to-ball contact for Vaughan and Houchins helped the speedy runners score during the 2nd and 5th innings respectively. That was a hard-earned victory after the losses to Virginia Wesleyan. The second game featured an early score from a wild pitch, but the bats of R-MC during the 4th inning led to a split series. Although Roanoke only had one win that weekend, the two opponents were tough, and the Maroons played competitively at all times.<\/p>\n
