{"id":8175,"date":"2025-01-30T23:12:37","date_gmt":"2025-01-31T04:12:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brackety-ack.com\/?p=8175"},"modified":"2025-01-30T23:12:37","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T04:12:37","slug":"inauguration-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brackety-ack.com\/?p=8175","title":{"rendered":"Inauguration Music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As many eyes turned towards the inauguration on January 20th, I wanted to share about an overlooked aspect of the festivities. Since 1801, \u201cThe President&#8217;s Own\u201d United States Marine Band has been the provider of music for Presidents and has played at every inauguration. This means the only inaugurations it has not played at in some capacities were George Washington\u2019s and John Adams\u2019!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lieutenant Colonel Ryan Nowlin, the 29<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> director of the President\u2019s Own, was the director for the festivities, along with Master Gunnery Sergeant Duane King, the 40<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Drum Major of the President\u2019s Own. The band was supposed to perform in the parade before getting to the ceremony and performing both prelude music and during the actual ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The musical program included mostly Americana, but there were some other genres of music played as well. The prelude music was a mix of marches and traditional folk tunes, including \u201cMy Country \u2018Tis of Thee\u201d and \u201cAmazing Grace.\u201d This music showed off the playing abilities of the top military band in the country. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ceremony music is not seen as musically challenging, but to play that many marches perfectly takes talent. Many John Philip Sousa marches were played, including \u201cThe Diplomat,\u201d \u201cHands Across the Sea\u201d and the Marine\u2019s march of \u201cSemper Fidelis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The President\u2019s Own does more than just play a concert. It is their job to play \u201cHail Columbia\u201d once the oath of office is administered to the Vice President and \u201cHail to the Chief\u201d once the oath of office is administered to the President. There is even a person whose sole job is to let the conductor know when to start each piece so that they are on schedule. This year, that job belonged to their Operations Officer Lieutenant Colonel Douglas R.
