Have you ever thought to yourself\u00a0 \u201cMan, I wish there was a contemporary and modern musical adaptation of Homer\u2019s epic tale <\/span>The Odyssey?<\/span><\/i>\u201d If so, I have some fantastic news for you! If not\u2026 please hear me out anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our story today centers around one man and his vision. Jorge Rivera-Herrans, also known as Jay Herrans, is the writer of concept musical <\/span>EPIC<\/span><\/i>, which follows the story of <\/span>The Odyssey<\/span><\/i>. Herrans and the other vocalists really bring new light to the classic tale, and create an engaging and enjoyable musical. Herrans also works with indie animators to create \u2018official\u2019 animations to go with each song, which are incredibly impressive.<\/span><\/p>\n

EPIC<\/span><\/i> is released in \u2018sagas,\u2019 which represent different story arcs from <\/span>The Odyssey<\/span><\/i>. As of now, the released sagas are the \u201cTroy Saga\u201d, \u201cCyclops Saga\u201d, \u201cOcean Saga\u201d, \u201cCirce Saga\u201d, \u201cThunder Saga\u201d, and \u201cWisdom Saga\u201d. Two sagas \u2013 the \u201cVengeance Saga\u201d and \u201cIthaca Saga” \u2013 have yet to be released.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Each individual character has their own instrumental motifs that play in songs where they have a relevant role. Often, the motifs will repeat in later songs, signifying the continued importance of the character, even if they have died. Every song is unique, but a lot of elements overlap, creating a listening experience that is both interesting and cohesive.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a fan of <\/span>Hamilton, Phantom of the Opera, <\/span><\/i>or <\/span>Les Miserables<\/span><\/i>, I think you\u2019ll really enjoy <\/span>EPIC<\/span><\/i>. You can find the songs in order on an official playlist on Spotify (and probably other music streaming platforms as well!), or you can find Youtube playlists that include the animations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
