The Easter bunny, Easter hare, Easter rabbit, etc.
\nWhichever name you know it by, this folkloric creature that
\ngoes around laying Easter eggs has become a principal symbol
\nof Easter. I had accepted this part of the holiday as a simple old
\nwive\u2019s tale but after some research I went down a rabbit hole
\n(pun intended) of symbolism and a lot of speculated origins to
\nthe myth.<\/p>\n
One of the theories is that the symbol of the Easter bunny
\ncomes from Pagan origins. Jacob Grimm, a folklorist and one
\nof the famous fairytale writing brothers (yes, those brothers),
\nargued that the Easter bunny was chosen as a symbol of Easter
\nbecause it was created after the Goddess \u201cEostre\u201d, which is the
\nPagan Goddess of fertility with a bunny as her animal symbol.
\nRabbits, due to their stereotype of being easy to breed and
\nhaving a large amount of offspring, symbolized fertility as well.
\nAs to how these traditions got to the United States,
\nit\u2019s said that during the 1700\u2019s, German immigrants arrived
\nin Pennsylvania with stories of a hare called \u201cOsterhase\u201d or
\n\u201cOschter Haws\u201d that laid colorful eggs in nests that the children
\nmade. Then the United States expanded these gifts with
\nchocolate and candy.<\/p>\n
Finally, eggs are used as a symbol of new life, as well as
\nthe chicks who hatch from them that have also become a face
\nfor the holiday. The beginning of spring represents flowers
\nblooming and life coming around after being hit by harsh
\nwinters, which ties into this symbolic \u201cnew life\u201d. This had a
\nmore valuable significance back in the day when harsh winters
\ncould be deadly, but if you hate winter then I am sure you will
\nappreciate the celebration.
\nEaster has a special meaning that can be shared by
\neveryone. In a religious Christian sense, it does represent the
\nresurrection of Jesus, but it also represents rebirth in general,
\nnew life, and hope for this new year. So, I hope you enjoy your
\nEaster whether you are celebrating it or not, whether you are
\nreligious or not. Just remember, it\u2019s an opportunity for a new
\nlife.<\/p>\n
