I have 3 on<br \/>\ncampus jobs and yet don\u2019t make enough so I also have<br \/>\nto work off campus. I work for the Brackety-Ack (duh) as<br \/>\nan editor and a writer which I love doing. I also work as<br \/>\nan outdoor adventures specialist and in the Belk fitness<br \/>\ncenter for campus rec (literally the best job on campus I<br \/>\nlove it so much). I also work for the center of spiritual life<br \/>\n(which is also amazing). All of this is to say that I really like<br \/>\nworking on campus and it comes with a lot of benefits.<br \/>\nAll of my managers understand that academics come<br \/>\nfirst, and I\u2019m very easily able to schedule around them.<br \/>\nSo on top of three jobs I really like doing, I\u2019m<br \/>\nmaking sure that I am prioritizing academics, so even<br \/>\nwith a busy schedule I feel very balanced. Additionally, I<br \/>\nnever really have to go far for my jobs here. I walk over to<br \/>\nBelk or Colket, and occasionally go off campus for<br \/>\noutdoor adventures, but that\u2019s nothing compared to a 15<br \/>\nminute drive multiple days a week to an off campus job.<\/p>\n<p>I would much rather work my three on campus jobs and<br \/>\nleave it at that (because it\u2019s already a lot). But<br \/>\nunfortunately, I cannot, due to the campus wide pay rate<br \/>\nbelow minimum wage at a whopping 9.5 an hour.<br \/>\nDon\u2019t get me wrong, I love all of my jobs at<br \/>\nRoanoke, and it really is amazing working on campus.<br \/>\nBut, for students who struggle financially like myself, 9.5<br \/>\nan hour just doesn\u2019t cut it. It\u2019s below the minimum wage<br \/>\nin Virginia (by a dollar and a half), which makes it<br \/>\nhard to buy groceries and pay bills. There are plenty of<br \/>\npeople I know who work both on AND off campus jobs<br \/>\ndue to this. Working off campus is great for building up<br \/>\nmy savings, I just wish I didn\u2019t have to do it. Roanoke<br \/>\nCollege is a great school, and I absolutely love it here.<br \/>\nHowever, there is always room for improvement, and I<br \/>\nthink this is probably one of the areas that needs it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Written by Mikaela Gantz As someone with a plethora of jobs at Roanoke I feel like I am allowed to speak on this matter.
