{"id":7634,"date":"2024-01-26T10:54:15","date_gmt":"2024-01-26T15:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brackety-ack.com\/?p=7634"},"modified":"2024-01-26T11:28:16","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T16:28:16","slug":"7634","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brackety-ack.com\/?p=7634","title":{"rendered":"\u201cThe Wolves\u201d with Director Danielle Barre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Written by Sabrina Rogers<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another play is on the horizon at Roanoke College\u2019s Theater! \u201cThe Wolves\u201d is directed by our very own Danielle Barre, who we interviewed to give us some insight about this show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Q: \u201cWhy did you choose this play?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A:<\/strong> \u201cWe chose this play because it&#8217;s a great fit for our program, and our students advocated for it. Whenever\u2026students push for a show, we\u2026pay attention! We\u2026included it<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in our reading series because the script is great. It&#8217;s funny, moving, and feels\u2026true to life. Anyone who [was] or has spent time with high school girls\u2026will recognize these characters. We were\u2026looking for plays with large cast sizes so we could get more folks involved [this] season.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Q: \u201cWhat do you want the audience to leave with after this play?\u201d<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A:<\/strong> \u201cI hope that people leave with a new\u2026stronger appreciation for the depth and complexity of adolescent girls&#8217;&#8230;lives. There&#8217;s\u2026richness and rawness here that we often forget or\u2026ignore. This play won&#8217;t allow us to do either. We&#8217;re confronted with the fierceness and playfulness inherent in all these girls. As we watch them try to make sense of their personal\u2026political beliefs, relationships, and hopes for the future, we can begin to reevaluate our expectations of what\u2026girls are capable of.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Q: \u201cHow does location affect the interpretation of the play, especially it being a staged reading?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2026try to get our staged readings out of the theatre and into a new space on campus. For this reading, we hoped to be on the soccer field. That, unfortunately, didn&#8217;t work out\u2026we sought out someplace that would protect us from the elements and\u2026keep the field in view&#8230;Our aim is for the location\u2026to enhance the performance, whether that&#8217;s putting the location into context, helping\u2026[audiences] connect to the material, or giving\u2026actors a bit of inspiration that a traditional set would give them. Ultimately, our main reason for getting out of the theatre is to better serve and connect with our\u2026community. We&#8217;re always open to collaboration\u2026with other departments and organizations!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0Q: \u201cWhat has been the biggest challenge, as a director, with this show?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0A:<\/strong> \u201cSimilar to\u2026last staged reading\u2026this script is complex\u2026The characters have multiple conversations simultaneously, talk over one another, and\u2026change thoughts mid-sentence. It&#8217;s a lot to track!&#8230;Figuring out how much movement we could\u2026add to the reading to enhance the performance without taking away from the actor&#8217;s ability to read their scripts was a challenge. I&#8217;m fortunate that it wasn&#8217;t solely my challenge\u2026because the cast members were wonderful collaborators.
