A powerful tornado hit Mississippi on Friday, March 24. The death toll, as of writing, is 26 people. This tornado developed from a supercell storm, a kind of storm that is not very common, but often very violent and destructive in nature. This tornado tore through multiple towns, but hit Rolling Fork, MS the worst. It was a nighttime tornado, which is typically more detrimental simply because people cannot see them coming and adequately prepare. Even if they could see them coming, there is also the issue of people being asleep when one rolls in. The biggest issue with natural disasters is they are becoming more frequent, and more costly. They are taking a bigger toll on human life and on the buildings and places we inhabit and work. They are becoming more deadly. One only has to look to climate change for a reason why.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n As the climate warms, and our atmosphere reaches a threshold it cannot come back from, we will be hit with more and more devastating events of extreme weather. This extreme weather does not only come in the form of tornadoes, however. Droughts, floods, and storms of all kinds will begin to get more frequent and more costly as our atmosphere warms. Along with the direct impacts of these events, death and destruction, comes indirect impacts. These include, but are not limited to, food shortages, increased homeless populations, lack of clean drinking water, mass migrations, and human conflicts. These are serious issues, caused by a very serious thing, climate change.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We have the opportunity to prevent, or at least delay, the downfall of our planet. We have a voice and we have a say in what is happening to our atmosphere. If people care, things will change. It’s not easy, and it’s certainly not an unopposed process, but it is something that needs to be fought for. This is it. This world is all we have. We can do better for it.
