The new class of Congress members experienced a whirlwind surrounding their inauguration. The media swarmed over the group as there were contentious discussions and votes regarding the next Speaker of the House. In addition to the spectacle starring various members of the Republican party, one new Republican took the stage as a unique controversial character: George Santos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Representing New York\u2019s third congressional district, Santos is described on his campaign website as, \u201c<\/span>the son of immigrants, who grew up in a basement apartment in Jackson Heights, Queens\u201d (2023). The description of Santos and his hardworking family have the makings of a heartwarming story of the American dream. Unfortunately for Santos, many of his accomplishments and stories from his campaign trail are riddled with falsities (Levin, 2023). Santos claimed that his mother died in her office during the 9\/11 attacks, though records indicate that she worked in Queens. Santos claimed in an interview that four of his employees lost their lives in the 2016 Pulse Nightclub shootings, though records including the names of victims do not correspond with records from Santos\u2019 employers. Most recently, Santos has been alleged of being a former drag performer in Brazil who competed in pageants. The jury is still out on the credibility of these claims, but they add to the unique picture of Santos within the conservative party.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Santos has deflected many of the questions raised by the media about his career, but he has also faced questioning from within his own party. Several members of Congress have called for his resignation, but Santos holds firm that he was elected fairly and should carry out the rest of his term. Republican officials from Nassau County, which is now represented by Santos, have called for his resignation almost unanimously.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Thus far, the alleged lies from Santos do not include anything that could be incriminating beyond an investigation from the House Ethics Committee.
