These officials include City Council President, Nury Martinez, and President of the LA County Federation of Labor, Ron Herrera. As well as Los Angeles City Councilmen, Gil Cedillo and Kevin de Leon.

On the tape, they were heard using bigoted language, promoting racial stereotypes, as well as making degrading comments. These remarks were attacking their colleagues, constituents, and even the young child of a congressman. The officials were also making plans to maintain their political power through redistricting, and upcoming elections.

The leaking of this tape has spawned public outrage across Los Angeles and the nation. Protesters interrupted a city hall meeting following the release, demanding Martinez’s resignation. Several of Martinez’s fellow council members called for her resignation as well.

Evidently, Martinez resigned from her seat on October 12. In her statement she does not address the controversy that spawned this resignation. Instead, she writes, “It is with a broken heart that I resign my seat for Council District, the community I grew up in and my home.”

This situation highlights a frightening concern that many Americans have. The city officials spoke with blatant disrespect for their constituents. In research published earlier this year by the Partnership for Public Service, over fifty percent of Americans surveyed had little trust in the federal government to do what is right or to ‘help people like me’. While the Los Angeles government is much smaller, they are no doubt elected officials and the public opinion is clear. People want elected officials who will represent everyone, not simply for someone to pick and choose.

This is interesting to think about in the context of the November elections. The people we elect to office represent our cities, states, and nation. It is important to take care with this choice. We assume these elected officials will look out for our best interest but behind closed doors, is this what we must look forward to?

By Hannah Guanti A 2021 leaked audio recording out of Los Angeles City Hall gives a frightening look into the closed-door meetings of our elected officials.
