For over a century it\u2019s been the Brackety-Ack, but last year our beloved newspaper started facing competition when a new forum for students arose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A social media app called Yik Yak relaunched last year and Roanoke students quickly adopted it. The app is a location-based social media platform on which users share text-based posts with other users in the vicinity. It\u2019s also anonymous, meaning you have no idea who is saying what.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yik Yak\u2019s anonymity results in plenty of hot takes since the poster\u2019s identity can\u2019t be tracked down. (But don\u2019t worry, posts can be removed for violating the platform\u2019s guidelines so things don\u2019t get out of hand.) Since Roanoke students dominate the \u201cherd\u201d of Yik Yak users in Salem, there are tons of Yaks only Maroons would understand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without any further ado, here is a compilation of my favorite Yaks from the first weeks of the semester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the first day of classes, someone was feeling sentimental about an experience every RC student has had at one point\u2026 getting lost in Olin Hall. \u201cReminiscing on the fact that I dropped ceramics last year for the sole purpose of I couldn\u2019t find the classroom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone loves our new campus cat, and one person couldn\u2019t help but proclaim their love for our feline Maroon on Yik Yak, \u201cSalem is my only source of happiness right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Yakker summed up what I think every time I wear a new outfit to class, \u201cHope someone sees me and thinks I\u2019m quirky today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Monday, commons served a Roanoke staple for lunch which inspired this genius joke: \u201cYou\u2019re telling me a general made this chicken?\u201d The cherry on top was this reply from someone who\u2019s location was tagged Hollins University: \u201cI\u2019d say tso.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but certainly not least, this budding philosopher shared the dilemma faced by those of us who listen to the news a little too often. \u201cChoosing whether to be upset about micro-plastics in my blood or happy about the indomitable human spirit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come back to page five in the next issue for another installment of the Brackety-Yik Yak!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Kristi Rolf What\u2019s Roanoke students\u2019 favorite way to voice their opinions and update each other on campus news?
