These past four years have been some of the most remarkable for Roanoke College. The College and its community have experienced some major changes along the way as well as some very memorable moments.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Certainly, one of the strangest moments in the past four years occurred early in the 2018 fall semester. The MAQ flooded after heavy rains and a plumbing failure. This resulted in a completely flooded soccer field. Some Maroons were quick to take advantage of the new lake on campus and began kayaking across the area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In September 2019, the College hosted Tibetan monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery in southern India. These monks attended events around campus and held lectures on many subjects such as meditation, the meaning of mandalas mandalas, and other subjects. They also participated in volleyball games and played basketball on campus. They interacted with students and were a sight to be seen around campus. Their visit culminated with the creation of a mandala in the Colket Center. At the end of the week the beautiful work of art was wiped away in order to remind everyone in attendance that nothing is permanent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Unfortunately, 2020 brought some of the hardest times upon the College. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the school to send students home and do online learning. It remained like this for the remainder of 2020 and all of 2021. Only in the fall of 2021 did we see a return to in-person classes with COVID protocols still in place. This was certainly one of the toughest times the College has faced but in the end, it brought the Roanoke community together as we endured these obstacles together.\u00a0 The pandemic also brought us the first socially-distanced graduation ceremony for the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Meanwhile, 2022 has brought back some sense of normalcy. We saw the return of the President\u2019s Ball and other campus events. The school announced the start of a new graduate program, a Master\u2019s of Business Administration. Finally, the biggest news of all that 2022 brought us is the retirement of our beloved President Maxey. For many of us he is the face of Roanoke College and will be remembered as one of the most iconic presidents the College has had, bow tie and all.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" by Edgard Lacayo These past four years have been some of the most remarkable for Roanoke College.
