\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This year\u2019s Golden Globes were held on Jan. 9, though not how they are traditionally. There was no red carpet or big ceremony that was televised; there was only a private show with the results released on the internet and social media.\u00a0 This definitely made the event more easily overlooked, but there are still some highlights that should not be simply brushed under the rug.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u200bOn the television side of things, HBO\u2019s \u201cSuccession\u201d came out on top with the most awards. They won Best Drama Series, which was well deserved, though out of the nominations \u201cSquid Game\u201d was definitely the most talked about and had the most media coverage. It seemed a bit of a surprise that it didn\u2019t win that category, even though it is often the case that public popularity and amount of awards won do not correlate.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cSquid Game\u201d did still leave the night with an award though, with O Yeong-su winning Best Supporting Actor. \u201cSuccession\u201d also won Best Supporting Actress with Sarah Snook and Best Television Actor in a Drama Series with Jeremy Strong. After its sweep at the Emmys, some anticipated that \u201cTed Lasso\u201d might have a similar sweep at the Globes, but the show only won Best Television Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series with Jason Sudeikis. It also did seem mildly surprising that \u201cWandavision\u201d only had one nomination and no awards with all the coverage and praise it received \u2014 but, then again, popularity isn\u2019t always a reliable indicator for awards season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u200bOn the film side of things, there didn\u2019t seem to be too many surprises. The biggest one would probably be Nicole Kidman winning Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for \u201cBeing the Ricardos.\u201d This is not to say it was undeserved, but the impression seemed to be that the race would be between Kristen Stewart for \u201cSpencer\u201d and Lady Gaga for \u201cHouse of Gucci,\u201d and it was a bit surprising that neither of these films received any awards. It was also a bit surprising that \u201cDune\u201d didn\u2019t win for Best Motion Picture Drama.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Less surprising was \u201cEncanto\u201d winning Best Animated Picture; this was very expected, yet also well earned, as this movie seemed to give everyone the bit of happiness they needed by the end of the year. Overall, it seems the Golden Globes was a relative success, even with its different execution this year!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
