{"id":6187,"date":"2021-05-21T12:00:36","date_gmt":"2021-05-21T17:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brackety-ack.com\/?p=6187"},"modified":"2021-05-21T12:00:36","modified_gmt":"2021-05-21T17:00:36","slug":"folk-of-noke-alexis-barton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brackety-ack.com\/?p=6187","title":{"rendered":"Folk of &#8216;Noke: Alexis Barton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Written by Zach Dalton<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the past two years the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brackety-Ack <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ran under the strong leadership of former Editor in Chief Kaelyn Spickler, a member of the class of 2021. While it is odd to talk about someone else at the beginning of a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Folk of \u2018Noke<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article there is a method to the madness. This issue\u2019s Folk, and my final interview, is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brackety-Ack\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new Editor in Chief: Alexis Barton. She is a sophomore turning junior that is a Communications and Sociology double major from Leonardtown, Maryland. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her favorite jolly rancher is grape, she explained, \u201cI\u2019m just different and unique like that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexis has been with the paper since her first semester of her freshman year for the sports page. As a reporter and an editor she has written a combined total for FORTY-ONE articles! &#8220;I was immediately drawn to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brackety-Ack<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when I arrived at Roanoke primarily because of my passion for writing,\u201d she explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexis learned how to write at the ripe age of four years old (very impressive!) but when she was in third grade she began her sports writing career. \u201cI would keep track of stats, records, and would write recaps after my sister\u2019s basketball games,\u201d Alexis laughed. Writing has obviously been a very large part of her life. When she was not journaling about her sister\u2019s basketball career, writing acted \u201cboth a hobby and an outlet for me,\u201d she said, \u201cso I knew I wanted to get involved in journalism at the college level.\u201d It was at an academic exploration day for the Communication department that she met Kaelyn. Alexis recalled that meeting her \u201cmade me especially interested in getting involved right away.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of plans for the future of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Brackety-Ack<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Alexis named a few ideas she had brewing, but her main concern is expanding the readership and being sure the paper reaches students and readers all across campus. She also emphasized her commitment to maintaining the diverse focus and inclusion set in motion by her predecessors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of her favorite memories at RC revolved around the paper. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting involved with the sports page specifically was a game-changer for me at Roanoke,\u201d she continued, \u201cI fell in love with the athletic department here and quickly became invested in our teams.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the conclusion of the interview Alexis was asked for any shoutouts she wanted to give to which she said, \u201cI\u2019d like to give a shoutout to Kaelyn Spickler and Garrett Ruggieri, without them I wouldn\u2019t have had the incredible experiences of working and growing with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brackety-Ack<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019d also like to give a shoutout to Chaplain Chris Bowen.
