Text from My Mother, 3:09pm<\/b><\/p>\n

Can you run Roomba<\/span><\/p>\n

and make sure she gets under the bed<\/span><\/p>\n

where the dust collects, and I cannot<\/span><\/p>\n

reach? Make sure she doesn\u2019t get stuck,<\/span><\/p>\n

you know how she gets,<\/span><\/p>\n

with rotor-brushes like little spider fangs<\/span><\/p>\n

sunk into a sock she can\u2019t suck up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She works so hard, and I love her dearly for her belly,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

crammed full of lint.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Brushing my Teeth Late at Night<\/b><\/p>\n

Right now, it\u2019s unconquerable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why do I do things<\/span><\/p>\n

with no immediate benefit<\/span><\/p>\n

other than the promise of eventual health?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Eventual security? I am in bed,<\/span><\/p>\n

and life feels pretty damn secure.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the morning, my face has a swamp<\/span><\/p>\n

filled with frogs and ivory pads\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

floating in muck.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Or maybe- a rotting piano,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

with uneven, pliable keys<\/span><\/p>\n

that could have been restored,<\/span><\/p>\n

if only someone had taken the time to do it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second Dog<\/b><\/p>\n

You\u2019re not as nice as the first one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I buy you treats to clean your mouth<\/span><\/p>\n

because it smells like rotten salmon and floor puff,<\/span><\/p>\n

but your mouth still stinks. When you sleep,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

you don\u2019t sleep in your crate like Bear did.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, you scuttle into my room and get under the covers\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and nudge yourself right between my legs,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

cold wet puppy nose prodding everywhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We play fetch in the yard, and you run<\/span><\/p>\n

over Bear\u2019s mound, bringing the ball\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

but refusing to let it go.<\/span><\/p>\n

I wonder how long it\u2019ll take for me to get used\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

to the way things are, and how soon that moment will be\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
