They then viewed one of his films. Students from both the screen studies concentration and sociology department were invited to this event at the Monterey House.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumar discussed his career over a meal of Commons\u2019 best Indian food. He originally worked in Bollywood but quit after becoming discontent with the system. The first film he produced independently was about the theater his father had built, named \u2018Kumar Talkies.\u2019 This later became the name of Kumar\u2019s film studio, which consists of he and one assistant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Janani\u2019s Juliet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the special screening that night chronicled a production group in India\u2019s take on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo and Juliet. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout this production, the three women bidding to play Juliet were exploring what it means to be \u2018in love,\u2019 especially in the context of honor killings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honor killings are acts of vengeance, usually death, committed by family members against female family members. Victims are perceived to have brought dishonour upon the family.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Janani\u2019s Juliet <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discusses the murder of Kausalya Shankar\u2019s husband by her family.
