{"id":4627,"date":"2019-09-20T21:00:01","date_gmt":"2019-09-20T21:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bracketyackrc.wpengine.com\/?p=4627"},"modified":"2019-10-05T04:05:44","modified_gmt":"2019-10-05T04:05:44","slug":"olin-unveils-exhibit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brackety-ack.com\/?p=4627","title":{"rendered":"Olin Unveils Exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Written by Jack Miller<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last Friday, the Olin Gallery unveiled two new exhibits: the calm and tranquil <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still(ness)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Roanoke alumnus Duane Cregger, as well as internationally renowned Rob Wynne\u2019s decorative <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post Nostalgia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 The opening ceremony featured a lecture by Wynne, in which he discussed his work and methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cregger, who graduated from Roanoke College in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts, currently resides and paints in southwestern Virginia. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still(ness)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, his latest exhibit, is described by the artist as a \u201cmoody search for tranquility within an unruly psyche.\u201d Cregger uses large canvases, oftentimes in close proximity to each other, to contrast their colors, brightness, and overall aesthetics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbitrine (Diptych),<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one of his newer pieces (currently on display in Olin), truly conveys the concepts that Cregger is exploring through this exhibit. Through the artist\u2019s use of varying shades of grey, as well as his hard raised lines, he conveys that uncertainty expressed within an unruly psyche. Following his pieces around the upper floor of the gallery, one can see that Cregger\u2019s pieces are fluid, almost like one continuous piece revolving itself in tranquility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe paint was not necessarily the focus of the artwork, it more relied on his lines, strokes, and symbols,\u201d said sophomore Erin Pearson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cregger\u2019s work has been purchased by fans and displayed in many collections, both public and private, including the actress Drew Barrymore\u2019s private residency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wynne\u2019s exhibit, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post Nostalgia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">features multiple styles of artwork in varying artistic mediums, many of which feature Wynne\u2019s signature hand poured, mirrored glass. Wynne\u2019s exhibition spans over 25 years of his life and follows a fluid narrative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEach work serves as context and springboard for the next,\u201d explained Lilly Wei.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Following the pieces around the room, Wynne\u2019s many phrases captured in mirrored glass catch the eye. The word \u201ccuriosity\u201d greets each viewer entering into the gallery, inviting everyone to embrace their curiosity and explore each and every piece in depth. His work echoes themes of literature and visual art history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wynne\u2019s many ink spot paintings, which are being displayed in the lower gallery of Olin, use not only reflective glass and shimmering designs but also asymmetry to create the appearance of continuous movement. One student compared some of his more gaseous and liquid-like pieces to Rorschach\u2019s inkblot tests.
