Some were even seen fishing.

2. Roanoke Rising Campaign

In the fall, Roanoke College held their annual Roanoke Rising Campaign to raise money for improvements around campus. Some of the improvements funded by previous Roanoke Rising Campaigns have included the addition of the Cregger Center, new residence halls, and renovations done in various buildings. This fall was the Campaign’s biggest success, and the fund has surpassed its goal of two million dollars since the campaign started.

3. Death row survivor Joseph Giarratano speaks

Joseph Giarratano shared his experience on how he survived being on Virginia’s death row for a crime many believe he was not responsible for. He now focuses on giving back to society by advocating for those who are falsely imprisoned and victims of mistreatment in the corrections system.

4. Beloved VT football coach Frank Beamer visits RC

The Cregger Center was packed as students, faculty, and community members gathered to hear what Frank Beamer had to say about his illustrious leadership. His biggest key to success was to maintain integrity in all of his endeavors.

5. Mac and Bob’s Bounces Back

The biggest buzz around campus in the fall was the potential of Mac and Bob’s closing. The restaurant filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy after two lawsuits, but the business is still up and running after the community rallied behind the restaurant and raised $147,000 to cover legal fees.

6. RC SuperFan

We all can agree that our athletic teams are incredible. Our facilities are innovative and modern for a Division III school, and out athletes work hard. To get students excited at games, CAB created the “SuperFan,” who paces the bleachers with free t-shirts to give away, cape swaying in the wind.

7. Quinn Harlan competed in 60m NCAA Championship finals

RC’s very own record breaking sprinter, Quinn Harlan, continued her winter track season longer than most athletes as she competed in the 2019 Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Collegiate Athletic Association Championship, where she placed fourth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.72 seconds.

8. This cause is important to the team and RC community; teammate Cadin Byrd was suffering from a cancer at the time of the fundraiser that is now in remission.

9. Theatre RC shined in the spotlight

Theatre RC put on many spectacular performances this year, including “Our Town” and “Exit, Pursued by a Bear.” With these performances, it is evident that Theatre RC is blessed with talented students who go greatly underappreciated- so keep an eye out for next year’s productions and support our theater department.

10. Tuesday nights at El Jefe

El Jefe recently opened up on Main Street, making it the perfect hangout spot for students. The restaurant realized this and created their own college night for students 18 and older. It is now the place to be on Tuesday nights, when nachos cost $2 and three tacos go for $7.

Written by Kaelyn Spickler Flood in October The talk of Hurricane Florence making her appearance on the East Coast scared many, but the effects of the storm were not greatly felt here at RC; however, shortly after, the campus turned into a lake for students to swim and kayak in.
