This holiday is prominently featured in Disney\u2019s animated film \u201cCoco\u201d (2017). But how accurately did the filmmakers portray the traditions? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey did a very good job from my perspective and from all the experiences that I had when I was a child.\u201d said Spanish professor Dr. Dolores Flores-Silva.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flores-Silva grew up in Mexico, where she remembers preparing the ofrenda (altar) each year with her mother and grandmother, just as Miguel\u2019s family does in the movie. In homes across Mexico, pictures of family members are placed on the ofrenda, along with tamales<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mole <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">chocolate sauce) and pan dulce (churros). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The representation in the film of Miguel\u2019s deceased relatives as skeletons is also closely tied to Mexican tradition. During el D\u00eda de los Muertos, students of all ages will hold contests in which they paint their faces and dress up as catrina<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">skeletons in human clothes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most importantly, however, \u201cCoco\u201d portrays the significance of family in Mexican culture, particularly through the close relationship of Miguel and his great-grandmother. \u201cThat\u2019s the way we are,\u201d said Flores-Silva, \u201cvery family-oriented, and that\u2019s what you see in the movie.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCoco\u201d will be shown on Oct. 31 at 8 p.m. in the Pickle Lounge.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Written by Charissa Roberson El D\u00eda de los Muertos, translated in English as \u201cThe Day of the Dead,\u201d is a Mexican holiday observed from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, in which families honor the deceased.
