Sophomore\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and Pi Kappa Phi president of the Alpha Alpha class William Carol Olson is especially\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">enthusiastic about the holiday this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cLast year my parents, who met and graduated here at Roanoke College came for a visit. They\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">couldn\u2019t make it this year, but I feel that I still had a rewarding weekend. Possibly an even more\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">insightful one of that!\u201d He kept his reflections brief and vague. Naturally, he was hiding\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">something.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Upon further ethical probing, he led me to his dorm room, where I discovered an abundance of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">organic snacks and cages fit for a large marsupial of the western hemisphere, and Jack Hanna\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">inspired portraits command stripped to the cinder block.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI adopted Winston in the final weeks of 2017. At first, I wasn\u2019t very keen about him. Actually, I\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was terrified of him. But the more we talked, the more I realized that he was an alright kid just\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hankering for leftovers in the bushes outside of Fox\u2019s first floor window. I thought about how\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that used to be me, and I thought, \u2018why not?\u2019 And here we are now!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Winston, I learned, is a Didelphis Virginiana Opossum, or North American Opossum.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m not embarrassed by our family photos.\u201d Olson glanced up at a series of Jack Hanna inspired portraits command stripped to the cinder block. \u201cAnd I\u2019m not ashamed to turn down a party to spend time with him. When I\u2019m not in class, I like to toss the baseball and talk about girls with him. This Family Weekend was especially exciting for us, as this was our first year as a family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As complex as his new paternal role may be, Olson gracefully pulls off the \u201ccool dad\u201d persona.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His bleached tips and \u201cWillieC\u201d lip tattoo will attest to that. Olson locked eyes with Winston,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and before walking me out of his room, gave him a kiss on the nose.
