{"id":3545,"date":"2018-02-08T21:54:53","date_gmt":"2018-02-09T02:54:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brackety-ack.pages.roanoke.edu\/?p=3545"},"modified":"2018-02-08T21:54:53","modified_gmt":"2018-02-09T02:54:53","slug":"rc-quiz-bowl-teams-buzz-their-way-to-tournament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brackety-ack.com\/?p=3545","title":{"rendered":"RC Quiz Bowl Teams Buzz their way to Tournament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Written by Bradley Bommarito<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two teams from RC\u2019s Quiz Bowl club recently competed in a sectional championship tournament in North Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis past weekend, we represented Roanoke College at the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Sectional Tournament for our region held at UNC-Chapel Hill. \u00a0Our two teams competed against Duke, NC State, Virginia Tech, Liberty, UNC-Wilmington, Elon, and Washington and Lee,\u201d said Dr. Gary Hollis, chemistry professor and coach of RC\u2019s Quiz Bowl Team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">RC students went up against some of the finest minds in the area in a contest of quick wits. \u00a0Students thrived under the pressures of the competition and put forth their best effort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI decided to attend the Quiz Bowl tournament at UNC Chapel Hill since I wanted to test my knowledge against people from larger schools, and I thought that it would be a very fun experience. \u00a0The tournament allowed me to learn a lot about my fellow teammates since we spent a lot of time together. \u00a0I also enjoyed competing and challenging myself,\u201d said freshman Liam Courtney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The tournament was an action-packed day that represented an opportunity for both personal and team-oriented growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe Quiz Bowl tournament was definitely an adventure. Even though there was a bit of confusion with scheduling, it was great to see all of the members shift things around to be there for the team. The experience was rewarding and as a result I\u2019ve discovered many things about my friends and myself, found the confidence to finally hit the buzzer and test my trivia knowledge, as well as compete in a whole new area other than what I\u2019m accustomed to,\u201d said freshman Carly Schepacarter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quiz Bowl allows students with knowledge of obscure facts and trivia to showcase their skills and assess their abilities. \u00a0Students put an incredible amount of dedication into both practice sessions and competitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI enjoy doing quiz bowl because I can finally put to use my extremely useless knowledge. \u00a0Like, it&#8217;s the only time I&#8217;m ever going to use my experiences with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">House of Mirth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the esteemed novel by Edith Wharton. \u00a0My team performed&#8230; it performed and I have no clue how we did because our sponsor made us leave before we got our results. Which was a shame, because there was this cute girl I wanted to talk to.
