{"id":3452,"date":"2017-12-08T20:26:25","date_gmt":"2017-12-09T01:26:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brackety-ack.pages.roanoke.edu\/?p=3452"},"modified":"2017-12-08T20:26:25","modified_gmt":"2017-12-09T01:26:25","slug":"stress-levels-rise-as-finals-week-approaches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brackety-ack.com\/?p=3452","title":{"rendered":"Stress Levels Rise as Finals Week Approaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bradley Bommarito<\/p>\n<p>As the fall semester comes to an end next Friday, students are faced with a seemingly endless amount of papers to finish, projects to complete, and exams to tackle.<span class=\"x_Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>This is a unique point in the academic year where students are studying more and for longer periods of time.\u00a0<span class=\"x_Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Examine any course syllabus here at Roanoke College and you\u2019ll notice that final exams are typically weighted at a much higher grading value than other factors such as homework, attendance, and class participation.<span class=\"x_Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Final exams can count as up to nearly half of an overall course grade, especially in math and science courses.<span class=\"x_Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Passing the final exam is often necessary to pass the course.<\/p>\n<p>With the mounting pressure that comes with the arrival of exam week, stress levels are naturally increasing among the student body.<span class=\"x_Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>If you can look at yourself in the mirror right now and say that you\u2019re not stressed at all, you\u2019re only fooling yourself.<\/p>\n<p>But stress can be easily managed and reduced.<span class=\"x_Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Maroons are utilizing all sorts of different methods of releasing and even avoiding stress so that they can be their best selves during finals week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI usually cope with stress by being mindful of what I\u2019m doing and staying in the moment.<span class=\"x_Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I can only think of one thing at once, so as long as I focus on what I\u2019m doing, I don\u2019t get stressed about other things,\u201d said Casey Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>Some students prefer to release stress through physical activity, which is one of the<span class=\"x_Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>the most commonly recommended stress-busting strategies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cope with stress by doing physical activities like going for a run or to the gym to take my mind off of things for a brief period of time,\u201d said Ellie Schad.<\/p>\n<p>Engaging in physical activity releases endorphins in the brain that promote restful sleep and act as natural painkillers.<span class=\"x_Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Unsurprisingly, exercise is a popular go-to for when times are tough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cope with stress by distracting myself, oftentimes that includes running it out or painting,\u201d said Carly Schepacarter.<\/p>\n<p>Physical activity can not only serve as a way of relieving stress, but it can also bring people together who enjoy the same hobby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of my favorite methods of stress relief is dancing and listening to music. I am part of a new club on campus called \u2018Maroon Movement,\u2019 where every Saturday we get together and practice a choreography routine for about two hours and just have fun dancing.
