On Saturday March 18th the Lynchburg College Hornets traveled to Salem to face off against the Maroons. This was both teams’ first ODAC game of the season. The Maroons went into the game with a 4-2 record, while the Hornets came into the game with a 6-1 record.
Extra security was required at the game because over 1,500 people attended the game and filled the stands over capacity. Everybody, including the Rooney core, was out to cheer and celebrate the game. The tension and spirits were high for the game.
The crowd was chanting and cheering for the Maroons during the entire game.
The Maroons started off the game great. They were able to take control of the ball first and were up 3-1, but soon the Hornets would catch up and it would be a back and forth game for the rest of the night. Joey Coretti,’12, scored to tie the game nearing the end of the half before Lynchburg scored two goals to gain a halftime lead of 6-4.
Roanoke came out of the locker room ready to go scoring 4 goals right off the bat. Then Lynchburg responded by scoring 4 goals. Eventually, the two teams were tiedby the end of the night 12-12, this led into sudden death overtime.
Unfortunately, the Maroons lost in overtime. The Maroons are now 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the ODAC, while the Hornets are now ranked #1 in the conference and are 7-1 overall. For the first time in four years Lynchburg won over Roanoke.
Richard Lachlan, ’13, and Joey Coretti, ’12, each had three goals and one assist in the game and led the Maroons in scoring. Brayden Gerrie, ’13, led the team in aqcuiring groundballs, with six throughout the game. He also had two goals for the Maroons, his first game with multiple goals. Freshman Max Satossky, ’15, also had six groundballs and won 8 out of 19 face-offs.
Both teams were very well matched. The Hornets won the majority of 28 face-offs, while the Maroons forced 22 turnovers throughout the game and they had 21 successful clears out of 22. The Hornet’s win ended a five-game winning streak for the Maroons.
The Maroon’s next game is on March 24th against Hampden-Sydney in Farmville, Virginia at 1:00pm.
The women’s lacrosse team plays Randolph Macon College on March 24 at 2:00 pm in a home game.
