Women’s basketball defeats neighboring rival Hollins

Friday night, the women’s basketball team was able to clench a win against their rival Hollins Univeristy. The victory over Hollins gave the team a second straight win.
The win gave the team an extra confidence boost and good rhythm leading into the next few games. The Maroons move to 3-10, 3-6 in ODAC action, while Hollins falls to 5-10, 4-7 ODAC.
While Hollins struggled early, the Maroons were able to take the lead 11-0. Key players in the beginning were Rachel Dellahunt, Laurel Hankins, and Nicci Moats, all scoring baskets early on. This allowed the Maroons to take control of the game. Soon ODAC’s leading scorer, Jasmine Green, put Hollins on the board, but it was not enough to take the lead going into the half. The half ended 33-15, Maroons on top. Going into halftime the score was 33-15, Maroons on top.
Hollins tried to rally in the second half, but it was not enough to come back against RC. Ultimately the Maroons picked up the 66-51 win and set themselves up to jump up in the standings after defeating both Lynchburg and Hollins back to back.
The win also means that Roanoke has beaten Hollins 17 times, with a 65-2 all-time record against the school.
The women’s next games are home games on the 28th and 31st of January against Guilford College and Bridgewater College respectively. The game against Guilford College begins at 2pm and the game against Bridgewater College begins at 7pm.
